Pride and Humility

Detail

Sermon Notes:

  • It’s hard to recognize when we are proud.
  • When we are proud, we are stuck on ourselves.
  • When we are proud, we love to be better than everyone else.
  • When we are proud, we can’t listen or learn.
  • God hates pride.
    • Proverbs 16:5: “The Lord detests all the proud of heart.”
    • Proverbs 6:16-17: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him…
    • 1 Corinthians 4:7: “What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?”
    • Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others."
    • Ezekiel 28:13-17: “You were in Eden, the garden of God…You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.  You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones…Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor.  So I threw you to the earth.”
  • Pride is what made the devil the devil!
  • God opposes pride.
    • Proverbs 16:5: “Be sure of this, the proud will not go unpunished.”
    • Proverbs 15:25: “The Lord tears down the proud man’s house, but He keeps the widow’s boundaries intact.”
    • Proverbs 16:18-19: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”
    • Proverbs 26:12: “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?  There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
    • Proverbs 3:34: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
  • God is a tough adversary!
  • We must humble ourselves.
    • 1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
  • Focus on God and others.
  • Face the truth.
  • Learn to laugh at yourself.
